Autumnal Reflection

            I.
            the still air thickens
                    then somewhere beyond sound
            it thins

            silence merges with light
            creating a blue arc
            far above deciduous trees
                    whose golden multitudes
            fall effortlessly

            scattered light gleams
            momentarily
                    but soon loss mingles
            with weighty matter, and
                    we step heavily upon memory
            extinguishing glory

            II.
            seduced by reflective light
the fallen ride breath into human form

essentially amorphous, they balk at limitation
and their discomfort is our disease

            III.
            in the divine economy
            where leaves equal fallen angels

there is the enduring significance of trees
            the challenge
            to doubt, to trust
            to rebel or be
                              reborn
